Considered the first all-animated film ever made, creator Émile Cohl rendered it by drawing each frame onto paper then shooting it onto negative film, which is what gives the picture its "blackboard" look. Cohl was a French caricaturist and a leading figure in Les Arts Incohérents, a short-lived French movement founded in 1882 by writer/publisher Jules Lévy, which anticipated many aspects of later avant-garde art movements.

My soundtrack was created by mangling a portion of Bix Beiderbecke and Frankie Trumbauer's "Singin' the Blues."
