The Australian continent was first discovered by the Dutch and following the visit by Captain Cook of the Royal Navy Great Britain established a penal colony there. Over time more and more settlers arrived from the British Isles and then other countries. In the 19th Century Australia became a self-governing part of the British Empire and in 1907 became a dominion as the Commonwealth of Australia. Australian troops served heroically in World War I on harsh fronts such as Turkey and the Middle East. Afterwards Australia became a fully independent member of the British Commonwealth. Australian troops served with distinction in World War II in North Africa and the Pacific theater where the threat of a Japanese invasion forced the country to look to the USA for assistance. The last ties with Britain were broken in 1986 by the passing of the Australia Act though the Commonwealth continues to share a monarch with Britain. In 1999 a referendum was held to make Australia a republic but over half the population voted to maintain the Australian monarchy.

  • i have to defend Great Britain in this situation though you say in ww2 you had to look to the USA for help by that cutting all ties to the UK to defend the UK Britain was fighting a world war and the task of defending the entire british empire and her commonwealth i dont want to argue about this as i love australia and all canada new zealand and the rest of the Realms as my own nation we share a bond that could never be broken and may our nations live free forever

  • That statement was not some sort of accusation, just a simple fact. Britain was most heavily engaged fighting Germany and Italy and simply didn't have the manpower to defend all her colonies in the Far East so the US had to step in. I'm pro-Britain, pro-British empire but just in my opinion making an enemy of Japan to please the US was a mistake for British interests.
