White Weather/Moon Weather
Sometimes when the snow comes in like this
slanting through late afternoon
to cause a thin triangle of winter
across the wall, mantelpiece; the point
piercing the wing of my armchair, I think of you.
It's a beautiful winter gash.
It cools the weather
of breathing, of an empty room, a wooden bowl
filled with dust and the small chipped circle
embedded in the coffee table. It brings back a day
too cold for hailstones, too warm for a frost
biting through the carpet and hearth,
all the conversation, the pathways; the maps
of a house we followed madly. Everywhere it settles
proves us cleanly. Uneven under the chills
of the whitest layer falling.
When the snow comes in like this
I see moon carried on the wind in pieces,
a day when the sudden point of it stabbed you
hard through the heart.

It is even more beautiful than I remember the first time.
