Here Holland America Line was TSS MAASDAM the ship and here 1 year older sister TSS RYNDAM wher actually designed as freight passenger combi liners, with room fore 65 passengers first class. But in the late 1940 emigration to the USA and Canada was booming. Holland America Line decided to redesigned the planned combi liners in full passenger ships fore + 800 pass. They became the RYNDAM and MAASDAM The first ships where tourist have 95% of the space and first class 5% in the top section o/t ship
Myself and my family emigrated from Canada in 1977, and crossed the Atlantic from Montreal to Tilbury (London) on this lovely ship. Sad to hear it was retired in 1991.
3 out of 4 of my family (including myself) celebrated our birthdays on the ship. We were given the VIP treatment by the captain and the crew. I turned 12.
I have many wonderful memories of the ship. Met my first "older" woman, a 14 yo Swedish girl. We could not communicate but we held hands for the entire sailing :-)
I sailed on the Stefan Batory back in early 80s from London to Montreal.
It was awesome--at the time---7 days of sailing through massive storms. Could not go out on deck, the bow would disappear under the water. As a kid it was a real thrill....love to repeat as an adult....would still get a real kick out of it I am sure.

My family sailed on S Batory back in 1971. I believe it was a 14 day transatlantic crossing.
