Januay 13,2010 :Wednesday at 4:17am a 3.9 magnitude earthquake shook the middle of the Swan Range in Montana. The closest town to the epicenter was Seeley Lake, which was situated 23 miles to the southwest.

It was felt as far away as St. Ignatius Montana, but most folks we spoke with in Seeley Lake slept through it. One resident felt and heard the whole thing. Donna Love said, "The noise was first like a log truck had pulled up to our house and muffled from inside. But it was very loud. And then our bed just gave a little bounce. Then the wall creaked up by the ceiling along with a scratchy noise. And then the log truck drove away."

The magnitude measurement is not a linear scale, but an exponential one. To put it into perspective, the 7.0 earthquake in Haiti was almost 1,000 times stronger than the 3.9 quake near Seeley Lake.

Minor earthquakes like the one felt this morning happen often. According to Michigan Tech, it is estimated that 30,000 earthquakes of this magnitude happen worldwide each year.

  • My sister and her family survived a quake in Northridge CA several years ago. The force was so great that the tupperware in the cupboards was shattered and matches which came out of the box lit after hitting the floor. They were bounced up and down on their beds up to four feet in the air. Her one kif slept through the whole thing.

  • @photolitherland I'm sorry but I was there in Haiti and I can tell you that you are far from correct. While I was there I saw God's hand more there than anywhere else I ever have in my life. I'd be glad to talk to you about it if youhave an interest. I pray that God would reveal himself to you. God is real and God does love you and the people of Haiti.

  • @iraqiprincess7 ya you are right

  • So ask yourself ... Do I really want to know god??

  • @dandeisel05

  • your catholic

i am also a catholic and if your a catholic then you will know that Jesus christ did talk about things like this, he has mention it will start like this little by little then the world will end someone day, were only here on a test to prove our love to God!

  • murder us? my friend this life is not gonna last in fact in this life there are much more pain, i know to some people it might seem like oh why did god punish but i think people who die in things like this were probably not having a good life here and had too much pain so its better to leave and find a better place like heaven thats my opinion and its what i think...

  • where does he say this?

  • As a Catholic i believe that god does not cause these things as it says in the bible he promised after the flood he would never do anything like that. as my pastor says sin is the root of these things (i dont get how sinning causes earthquakes and hurricanes) but God does not do this it is sin
