The Better Beer Authority discusses Iowa Pale Ale from the Millstream Brewing Company in Amana, Iowa. We also learn about International Bitterness Units.

Partial Transcript: "On tap Iowa Pale Ale

This is your Better Beer Authority Im James Knott.

Today we are talking about Iowa Pale Ale from the Millstream Brewing Company in Amana, Iowa. It is mainly available in Iowa, Wisconsin, and South Dakota. This is an American Pale Ale and was first produced in 2003.

The company claims it has a citrus zing. It is 5.7 percent alcohol by volume and has an IBU of 43.

IBU stands for International Bitterness Units. It provides a measure of how bitter the beer is. The bitterness is provided by the hops during the brewing process. However, a higher score does not always mean that the beer will taste more bitter. A heavier beer with a high quantity of malt will need a higher IBU to balance the flavor.

A light American lager might have an IBU of 5. A porter might be between 20-40. While some India Pale Ales and Imperial Stouts can surpass 100 the upper limit of the IBU scale.

Q&A

That gives us a BBA rating of (???). If you can get your hands on it, then try it out and let us know what you think.

Id like to emphasize that we are by no means experts on beer. We are just regular folks giving opinions. However, we are interested in learning about beer. We research each episode and we hope youll tune in to learn along with us.

If youd like to learn more about beer, Id like to recommend two websites that I go to a lot ratebeer.com and beeradvocate.com both are excellent resources for everything beer.

Thanks to Libbey Glass for providing the glassware for the Better Beer Authority. Libbey-DOT-com-SLASH-store

  • is there really a difference between a 7 and an 8????

  • @septip123 On our website we have definitions for our ratings.

8 – Recommended – Solid beer, with nice flavor and presentation – would happily drink it or buy it when available and would even recommend others do the same.

7 – Good – Has a nice flavor and presentation – would drink it any day of the week and would choose it over other beers at a bar, restaurant or store.

  • millstream sucks green donkey jizz!!!!!!

  • @fireball1552 I've read that on ratebeer, but beeradvocate takes it's opinions in a different direction. :)

  • Obviously none of you are BJCP trained! Your opinions are novice at best.

  • @ekarmst You should check out some of our newer Better Beer Authority episodes. Just wondering if you think we've improved any. Our latest is La Fin du Monde.

  • @jmohno Lol, people who live in Amana arent Amish...its funny people always think that.

  • give it up for the Amish.thanks for stating the ibu's dont make it more bitter i didnt know that now i do.

  • thanks for the review. I liked the IPA. i dont like ipa 's much but i liked this one alot.way better than sierra nevada's.i would give it a 8 out of 10.very drinkable.their hefferweizen is good too.

  • @ekarmst I agree. We aren't BJCP trained. We are just a bunch of average guys with tastebuds giving regular guy opinions. The goal of this show is to learn about beer, have fun and find new beers that we enjoy drinking. We have no interest in whether a beer is true to style. We only care about whether we enjoy it. Hopefully a few people will enjoy the show and learn a few things about beer at the same time. Beer snobs take a back seat in the BBA. :)
