Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen was at least recorded 3 times by Prihoda. This is the earliest of them.
Polydor 65993, stamped 1927.
Well. I think, beside it being a nice record, Prihoda tends to take on the finale a little too fast, therefor struggling to keep up, ending in rubble. But well worth hearing though ;-)
Enjoy !
Thanks so much for this-first time hearing this early version. I feel the same that the finale sounds very rushed. The first side is just about 3 min. 15 seconds so if that is close to the maximum for one side maybe they had to rush to fit it all in? To me, it sounds like they are pushing or being pushed faster and faster.

hmm, both sides of the record are about equally long, and the sides are completely covered, so it 'just fits'.
Though Prihoda played the finale just as fast in later recordings, where time was less a problem.
I think the "awe" factor takes it's toll here too, as I pointed out down below.

Wonderful parts 1 and 2 - a little too dazzlingly fast for my taste on part 3. A great player!!!

yeah, I agree on that speed. On his other recordings of the piece the finale is just as fast.
I wonder if the ignorance of the masses has pushed some players towards wanting to show off/prove something. Hard to imagine young violinists would be totally unaffected in the long run.
