PlusFlooding Swamps Iowa City, Drinking Water ScarceFlooding Swamps Iowa City, Drinking Water ScarceThe Associated PressIn Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the engorged Cedar river is flowing freely throughout the downtown. At least 438 city blocks are under water, and in some neighborhoods the water is 8 feet high. The AP's Mark Carlson has the story. (June 13)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] An estimated 10,000 people have been evacuated from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Shelters are housing hundreds of people but most staying with family and friends.UNAMED EVACUEE"A pillow, blankets, I got gatorade, water. The shelter has really helped us out, they really supply us fairly well, they help us out pretty well, we get warm food, anything, books to read, puzzles if you want to do puzzles, anything." The Cedar river has overrun more than 400 city blocks. City streets are waterways. BRIAN FAGAN/MAYOR PRO-TEM THE PEOPLE THAT LIVED 10 BLOCKS FROM THE RIVER NEVER IMAGINED THAT THEIR PROPERTY WOULD LOOK LIKE THIS. Mercy Medical Center evacuated more than 200 patients as flood waters defeated the sand bags. The most serious patients were moved by ambulance to other area hospitals. AMBER LUERKENS/WORKS IN HOSPITAL FLOODING BYTE Water is everywhere in the city but people are being asked to conserve as much water as possible. Fresh water is at a premium.MARK CARLSON/STANDUP one of the first things you notice while out here on the water is the overwhelming stench. Across the city much of the flood water is saturated with gasoline.BRIAN FAGAN/MAYOR PRO-TEM THERE IS A LOT OF DESTRUCTION. YOU DON'T HAVE A DOLLAR FIGURE YET. No major injuries have been reported during this dissaster. Officials believe the river crested Friday afternoon. Now the thousands of people are lefting waiting to get back home to access their damage. Mark Carlson, AP, Cedar Rapids, IA. ___ ___, The Associated Press.

Now sit back and watch REAl americans recover from a disaster w/o being breast fed the whole way by thier government. You bitch.

  • This video is of Cedar Rapids, not Iowa City as is misrepresented by the title. Two different cities, two different rivers. Iowa City has not yet crested but has already surpassed the levels in 1993 and is expected to be just as bad as Cedar Rapids.

  • These poor people with their flood properties. If they want to sell and get out they will get investors to buy and if they have insurance they can walk away with some decent cash. Flood Properties is a place where they can sell damaged houses without paying commission. Some real estate people put their stuff on there too. Investors are looking to buy these homes for cash!! Hope this helps!

  • bitch!

  • no thanks, I'm gonna pass on that one.

  • In 1993, my home- which was across the street from this river- went untouched. This year it went ten blocks beyond that. I live in the city and as crazy as this may sound to some of you -even though I live in Iowa-and I have for more than twenty years- many of us don't know crap about farms!

  • They never imagined it because it's never happened before. It hasn't even come close to happening before.

  • "People who lived 10 blocks from the river never imagined" that their homes would be flooded. Really? Have these people never heard of a floodplain? Rivers flood. Period. Wetlands (aka swamps) are nature's answer. They act like sponges, soaking up excess water and providing habitat for wildlife. Unfortunately, the environmental ethic in Iowa is weak. Over 90% of Iowa's wetlands have been drained for agriculture and development. So where else is the water supposed to go?

  • dude I was sooo scared. I was effected by it....
