A real treat for Al Bowlly fans. "I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter / Auf Weidersehn". This is pressed on vinyl but spins at 78rpm, and the one side is a mix of 2 songs. It is much quieter than the original sides, and the seller said that these were taken off the master stamper in the 60's. I cannot find the first song on youtube, so do enjoy!

  • my friend collector, pls allow me just a short note: check the speed, it's spinning faster -- it plays a half tone higher...

    cheers

  • @lindyhoppers it does? My turntable should be 78rpm, I'll have to print off a speed test. I can't alter it unfortunately :/

  • what year was this recorded? Quality is very good.

  • @dbeasht the seller I bought it from said that these songs were taken from the master in the 60's. Since it's pressed on vinyl, the sound quality is obviously better than shellac.

I haven't heard these two songs anywhere else, either on youtube or in my own Bowlly collection so I'm afraid I can't help you there

  • The Bowlly web site discography gives these two songs as recorded on 11 November 1938 and issued as Decca F-6916. It seems to suggest that Lover Come Back To Me and Dancing In The Dark were the coupling for the other side of F-6916 and recorded on the same day. The discography does not credit the band, suggesting an ad hoc/studio group for the occasion.

  • I have these on an LP, and also two original Decca 78 copies of them by Al Bowlly. The surface noise is horrendous.

  • @lindyhoppers The turntable seems to be spinning at the right speed according to my instruments. The first tune is in C; the second one is in Db, hence your impression that "it plays a half tone higher."..

  • @dbeasht "I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter" was writen in 1935, "Auf Wiedersehn, my Dear" in 1932. So I guess not much later than 1935 because "Auf wiedersehn..." wasn´t that new at the time.

    Just a thought.....

  • @mojoman4147 no bother. Thank you.
