not a genius... try writing a coherent ragtime song yourself man. You'll see it's hard as hell. In my opinion, Scott Joplin is a genius in every respect. He always knew how to make 3 or 4 themes fit into 1 piece seamlessly AND make it sound like it is natural and easy.

wow...slow down just a little and you will be able to work thru that Csection. Good job...this is a Joplin masterpiece.....
-
Joplin wrote this rag as a tribute to the magnificent waterfall display called the "cascades" at the 1904 St Louis World's Fair in 1904.

Composer's prerogative! :-)

yes, and gladiolus too, i think its intentional
-
have you ever noticed though that the structures of the 1st parts of maple leaf rag, the cascades and sugar cane are almost identical
-
Have you learned the last section yet?
-
Wait, wait wait, your great-grandfather saw Joplin in 1902?? Can you give more details??
BTW, great video, Latibes! That C theme is a tough'un.

I must disagree with you on this point. Cascades has a more 'linear' melody in A+B section. The C section's running octaves and counterpoint is very different to Maple Leaf. Joplins genius is the weaving of original ideas, melodies and themes into what is a fairly rigid structure.
