Level 5, the spaceport, has some intriguing music. It starts off with an electric sound, then stays silent for some seconds, another electronic sound, silence, and finally music. That is, if you listen to it emulated. On the real console, that electronic sound is echoed (or a similar effect takes place). For some reason, this phenomenon isn't emulated correctly.
I recorded the console sound (first part of the video) from my Mega Drive (Genesis), and the second one and the gameplay from Gens itself. I don't think it's only an issue of my computer or something, because I've also tried playing that song on Winamp (using the in_vgm plugin), and apparently, that file was recorded using Kega.
Anyway, this video is nothing more than a mere factoid about the Mega Drive's music processing. I wish I could get into detail about it, but I'm not an expert on that field.
EDIT: Read TomoAlien's comment, he explains it.

  • @TomoAlien Been thinking about playing with Famitracker for quite some time now.

I really wonder why the don't bother fixing the FM emulation in Gens. It's a more Tool-Assisted Speedrun oriented emulator, but still...

  • @srb2Espyo Yeah, the guitar in Sonic Spinball options is hard to emulate too. I think it's because the poor FM emulators can't handle high values of FM Feedback. What is the Feedback thingy? It allows for that distorted sound, often used for explosions, and it makes them sound fuzzier and fizzier. When used cleverly it can make some really nice sounds too.

You can play around with the FM stuff in Famitracker. It's for NES but it supports VRC7 expansion chip that uses FM synth.

  • @TomoAlien Actually you did, for the info that I didn't already knew. I used Kega when I was a beginner with emulation, but I remember it had a decent audio. And even though I don't play Sonic Spinball a lot, and I never played on the console, I have read that the garbled ear rape in the options menu is also due to that.

Thanks for the comment, the info is really useful.

  • Actually Kega Fusion supports those special FX (I've checked). It's actually poor FM emulation in Gens and in_vgm.

Also check Sonic Spinball - The Machine and Bloodshot/Battle Frenzy menu music for poor FM emulation issues in weaker emulators. You will hear very loud and annoying sounds in them when you use a poor FM chip emulator.

    Hope I've cleared that up.
