Lotte Lenya singing "Seeräuber Jenny" in the original 1931 film Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera). So intense in its simplicity!

The disconnect between her sweet high voice and the song's subject matter is really disconcerting.

yeh--U know it better, but when I see this, I think(or guess) that she is a Jew and its something like about tragic future. she sings like a very good trained(or natural) soprano coloratura, old Italian school,

may be too little for a big stage.

Kurt Weil was a genius. We all know what the symbolism is in this song. And Lotte Lenya's performance is magnificent. Calculated to throw off the evil doers who were on the rise. . .nonetheless they had to flee the Nazis. Well you likely know the history -- or you could google it if you don't. . . ;)

I love the minor chords after the chorus lines.

Some 30 years later the great Lotte Lenya made an appearance as KGB colonel "Rosa Klebb" in "From Russia with Love". Imho she was the greatest Bond villain ever seen.
