Shortly after head injury, the protective lining on the brain's surface starts to break down. Researchers watched in mice as microglia (immune cells that act as first responders in the brain) quickly sprang into action to help secure this barrier. The first part of the video shows microglia taking on a "jellyfish" shape, expanding and trying to plug up large holes in the lining. The second part of the video shows microglia extending their arms to fill in —or "caulk" — small gaps between cells in the lining. This is the first time these reactions have been seen in living brains.
