This video shows how to form a lacing loop for a Lorica Segmentata. This loop is used on all the Corbridge Types and theoreticly used on the Kalkriese Types. The base can be made a plain square, or in a more ornate shape. The method of curling it into a loop is up to you, you can get toothless pliers at a hardware store, or simply bend it in the vise.

If you anneal the brass, the metal moves beautifully. This is a great demonstration! I have made several loricae (and Gothic German harnesses) over the years, all by hand like this.

Yeah, I love working brass, very easy to work with and such a beautiful metal.
Funny to see you on Youtube too, I still have a CD with the 'Combatapulta' plans I bought from you a few years ago.

If you like working with brass, you are absoluetly going to LOVE working with bronze. You can cold work it into a spring, or heat it up and quench it to anneal it so it moved liertally like butter under the hammer. It's not brittle like brass and MUCH stronger. It holds a fine edge for blades too. Trouble is, it's not made in large quantities today and thus is hugely expensive. I use it exclusively on my Loricae.

I actually found a place where I live that sells decent size bronze sheets for $30, I think they were 6"x 2', which is pretty much the same size as the brass sheet I buy for only $5 more. I plan on using those for my next Lorica, probably a Newstead since I haven't built one yet. I've built a Corbridge Types A, C and B and a Kalkriese Type B, in that order. The gridle section probably isn't correct for the Kalkriese, but it is incredibly comfortable to wear and I find it to be a lot stronger.

Well, those can be kind of tricky to make, you need to cut a new brass disc and solder a brass pin into the center of the disc to act as a rivet, then carefully rivet it into place through the leather. Cut a small square washer to hold the rivet in place. Or if you can cast brass, you can make a new one piece disc with the brass pin already in place, this will be stronger.

Could you also show how to make the strap hinges and the buckle hinges? I'm stuck on those

That's a fantastic find for material! Too bad you don't live in MN. I would enjoy working with you in the armoury.
