It's the night before the 43rd marathon attempt, and Eddie is in reflective mood. Speaking after the team's final meal, he recalls the different reactions he has received on his journey around the country, and talks about one of the amazing people he met on the road, Rosie Swale Pope, who ran around the world.

Injuries and illness remain a problem, with chest pains and an ankle injury being major causes for concern. Eddie also discusses how he'll approach the final day running through London - he has made up his own Urban Rules to get him through the final 26.2 miles.

  • Ellen, Stick to your guns, what Eddie did is nearly beyond compare, I have done a couple of marathons and I know how much it took out of me although he has got over 10 years on me he is a one off. Yes he had good support but he did the running all by himself, its hard its lonely and some of the conditions were unbelievable. It shows the spirit of determination he has and all with humour. An amazing person. Good luck to him.

    Way to show a "mere" mortal can manifest near supernatural achievement, given such determination driven by such a worthy cause. Well done young man :¬]

  • Ellen, Your doing well if you can run for an hour, forget about the speed, you can do a marathon. When your starting out walk breaks are good until you have built up enough stamina. Give yourself double the amount of time you think you need to get to a fitness level. Walking uses a different set of muscles to running and allows you to go further. Try running at 8k and every 6th minute walk at 5k. You will cover the same distance in an hour as running constantly at 7.5k, you should be less tired.

  • Thanks. :-) I've had a personal trainer before and I've run outside before, so I know it's a lot easier on the treadmill 'cause it does a lot of the trajectory work for you, and I know about the incline. I beat my personal best today on the treadmill today :-) I was on for an hour (my last best was 50 minutes) at 7.5k. I always warm up and cool down, but I'm glad to hear it's ok to take walk breaks as I thought you were encouraged to stay the same speed throughout.

  • Ellen, Go for It, but running on a treadmill is a lot easier than outside, you need to increase the speed a little say 1k/hour and use one that can be inclined to about 1% and that will replicate outside. Take it slow and only increase your distance about 10% a week. Don't be frightened to stop and take walk breaks. It's like how do you eat an elephant? One mouthful at a time. How do you do a marathon? One step at a time. If he can do 43 you can do 1.

  • Thankyou :-) and also thankyou for the info about marathon running as I was considering making it an ultimate goal for myself, now I'm sticking to the treadmill! : -D Well done for doing two marathons by the way, that's wicked! I wonder how Eddie was post marathon, what he ate, if he healed ok, etc. I was so scared for him during the marathons 'cause he kept pushing himself even when it got dangerous and stupid. He must have been in the zone of 'Keep-going-keep-going-keep-go­ing'.
