First Karloff reveals that he changed his name to Boris Karloff when he first went on stage in 1910 because he didn't think his birth name, William Henry Pratt, would work as an actor. The first guest is Jeffrey Taylor, a schoolmate from 1907. It seems Karloff preferred playing cricket to academics.

Karloff left King's college in London in 1909 following his mother's death and relocated in Canada where he did a variety of menial jobs until he made his stage debut in "The Devil." After a long stint of touring with stock companies, Karloff arrived in Los Angeles where he worked as an extra. His film debut came with "Criminal Code" in 1931. His big break came with "Frankenstein" also released in 1931.

This is a great retrospective of Karloff's career, including a discussion of his performance in the play "Arsenic and Old Lace."

  • I have never seen this show in its entirety...thank you so much. What a superb gentleman and excellent actor.

  • @mxylpx I'm glad you got to see the entire show. Thanks for watching. -Michael

  • what a classic. there is a clip on youtube in the year 2009 when she gave an interview and gave her dad's fans credit for his enduring success. r.i.p. boris karloff. you will forever live as a famous monster of filmland. much later, he hosted an hour-long t.v. series called ''thriller'' from the very early sixties.

  • Karloff was a great and humble man. I enjoyed this show and the Thriller series. You can find some episodes of Thriller on my channel.

  • Thanks for this interesting posting.

  • Did Evie ever get her charm bracelet??

  • Great video of a great actor and great gentleman. thanks for sharing!! now compare this with the "oprah/ tom cruise" interview.......where the hell did take a wrong turn to produce the actors we have today.....blah

  • @abbycici Thank you for sharing that experience, and you are certainly very fortunate to have that happen in your life. Personally, I'm a film fan and also a billiards player, and there are two people that I wish I could have shaken hands with, expressing my admirarion for the influence they had in my life. In pocket billiards, it would have been Willie Mosconi, but in cinema, it would obviously be Boris Karloff...Both were the ultimate gentlemen...

  • i wrote him a fan letter around 1960 and got back a short note with HIS actual signature. I was 8 years old. And I know he signed it...I had seen his handwriting many times..it was for real. What a wonderful man.

  • I wish he was grandfather. Than I would have a reasonable excuse to punch those responsible for the saw films in the face. They just don't make scary movies like they used to

  • The finale to a great three-part episode...The definative highlights are Frank Brink from the Anchorage Community Workshop (who incidentally passed away in 2009 at the age of 93), and Karloff's favorite cricket star, Jim Laker... Again, kudos to your wonderful posting...Thank you...

  • What a great tribute to a great man. Thank you for sharing.
