The expectation fulfilment theory is secured in physiology and biology, and is the most scientifically and evidence based theory of dreaming ever to be proposed.

Joe Griffin explains that the exceptions to the expectation fulfilment theory of dreaming help to prove it.

He addresses such questions as:

- What are the exceptions to using metaphors in dreams?
- Why do dead people appear as themselves during dreams?
- What about creative and problem solving dreams?

  • How would you account for dreams that have an experience of reverie/bliss and are ecstatic in nature containing beings of non-experience and located in familiar surroundings, ie exact rooms that duplicate the precise environment that is actually as it is at the moment of dreaming. i.e. your husband is in bed beside you sound asleep. this content as well as the rest is also part of the dream.

  • Thanks for your question. the REM state is a very flexible state, there are many different 'levels' of awareness and conciousness. Metaphorical dreaming is the deepest level of the REM state but there are different ways our consciousness can enter the REM state (eg daydreaming, hypnotic trances, learning something new, meditation).

  • i had a dream where a being of light took me out of my body during sleep and then out into cosmos and collapsed time, then showed me the creation of the universe, and everything that followed and gave me instructions..thats the short version...i always took this in at a different level of my consciousness and noted that it didn't fit with my other experiences of dreaming...was completely out of character. ...yet it was not meditation or a trance that produced this, it was sleep....just metaphor?

  • I will message you privately.

  • if a dreams can be a metaphor

how do we understand the correct meaning of the dream

  • There is a good answer to your question on the why-we-dream website under the section on interpreting dreams. Hope that helps.

  • I assume negative expectations are often nightmares.

  • @FEAR709 I dont know you but I do think this dream is metaphorical. It takes time to self interpret a metaphorical dream. This dream may not be about marriage but may have something to do with seducing more than one woman. After all, you already know you dont want to marry so "engaging" a woman through proposal means you are enticing more than one woman because you have learned you can. Make any sense? Maybe your inner self is talking to you about this. Is this the thing you should be doing?

  • @whitebeeable i am here because tonight i saw myself well proposing. Then i somehow saw how it went out and travaled back in time/place and tried it again with a different girl. By the end of it i only saw a little from 2 scenarios. My point being wtf was that!? Btw i knew those girls in real life so i doubt it was a methaphore. Seriosly anybody wth was that all about. Btw i have never realy wanted to get married so that got me confused even more.

  • @meatisdeliciouse I'll tell you a dream I had as a kid. I used to wonder how much my eyes sparkled. I had a dream my eyes sparkled so much I fell in love with my reflection. Then the two sparkles turned into the two whites on either side of one eye. My reflection only had one eye!

  • @bandet888 My dreams are just annoying. I'm always trying to achive something like flying a plane or finding a hoard of money, but some mysteriouse force wont let it happen and I just wake up or the thing I am trying to acomplish become impossible, it's so anoying and I wake up fealing like I havent acomplished something AGAIN >: ( !!! It drives me crazy.

  • @bandet888 I hade an absolutely horrible dream once. I was walking through a massive field of tiny sharp peices of metal and then suddenly I turned magnetic and all the tiny shards of metal started sticking into my skin. slice slice slice, bleed bleed bleed.

  • My dreams are not very kind to me for some reason. Like I like to go swimming and I'll often have a dream where I'm not allowed to swim or I'm at a place where there is a lake but in my dream the lake dried up for some reason or something like that.
