@shakindave they give flavour and most of them just dissolve or soften as the dish cooks so there is no harm in eating them but obviously you wouldn't eat the cinnamon stick that's in the pounded spices.
I am missing something. you are adding the pounded spices in the beginning and i don't see you removing them. So you must have pieces of cinnamon, clove, cardomom pod, star anise still in the dish. Can they be eaten or will you break a tooth or choke on them?
