I found out about the CWiid project, which consists of a library called libwiimote, a wminput application to make your Wiimote into a mouse, keyboard, or joystick, and wmgui, a Wiimote GUI. In this video, I only use wmgui, which isn't that useful, but it shows the status and readout of the Wiimote data. The PC is running Ubuntu Linux 7.04 with the IOGear GBU221P USB Bluetooth Adapter (the blue glowy thing is a USB hub, my laptop only has one USB port, the Bluetooth adapter and my wireless mouse are plugged into it). The music is the end credits music from Twilight Princess (it's from the Wii, at least, didn't have anything better for background music).

The camera takes a while to focus...that's because it's older than I am, I had to record directly through my PC TV card because recording to VHS-C would mean horrible tracking issues.

  • Been a while since I've looked at this vid, but looking at our robotics team's code I found out that we're using the cwiid libraries to interface our robot (a tank-drive 3-wheeled platform designed for the IGVC competition) with the Wiimote (has 3 drive modes: Accelerometer, D-pad, and Nunchuk joystick). It's a great control method and the code is really simple!

  • Was that difficult to get running?

  • Not at all! It's a lot easier to set up in Linux than Windows, actually, because Linux has real drivers...Windows only has "drivers" (user-mode GUI applications that mimic drivers) like WiinRemote and GlovePIE.

  • You dont have Beryl? :(

  • Beryl doesn't run on a Pentium 3 850MHz with lousy ATi Rage Mobility 128 (16MB) graphics. Beryl DOES run (nicely) on my other (desktop) PC, AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (2.13GHz) with ATi Radeon X1600Pro 512MB graphics, but the laptop's easier to film with.

  • But now on my good desktop PC, I upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10 Beta and Compiz Fusion rules, it makes Beryl look stupid, it's insanely easy to install and works better :)

  • Hey CalcProgrammer1, I have been experimenting a lot with making homebrew games for the wii and I must thank you for making this vid, as it has given me a great idea for my final exams.

You wouldn't happen to know of any coding examples involving the wiimote accelerometer?
