I think it's exactly the OPPOSITE. As the semiconductors fabrication process gets smaller and smaller, (ex: 1000 nanometers in 1980's against 45 or 25 nanometers nowadays) the new devices get much more sensitive easy to damage.
And by the way, do NOT use a compressor, you're going to generate killer ESD with it.

$20 for a power supply? Are you joking? How about $60-70 for a low wattage one and anywhere from $200-300 for a high wattage one.
