One of the things I come across when advanced training is the way riders assess and position for bends. The majority of them adopt the lines as outlined in Police Roadcraft, which is to be commended, BUT when you have got your view, yoiu DO NOT need to position in that way.
In the first part of the video the rider likes to follow the curvature of the bend, when in some instances, by just looking and planning further ahead there is no need.
In the second part of the clip we had a go at introducing the numbered system, with 1 being the left of the carriageway and 5 being the centre. I know the clip is only short, but it does show a difference, withthe same rider coming off line to set him self up for the next bend.

  • Hello Nigel , good combination of assesment plus numbered system for positioning .Also ,good work giving the position in number with the necessary advance .

I liked to do this riding ´ virtually ´ trying to anticipate the front rider reaction ( i do this with all the clips).

    Regards .

  • @Hondacb500Gijon Thanks, there is a clip on line from Normandy, I will find the link and send it you.

  • Nice video, like the level of detail towards the end. The numbers system gave an excellent guide on road position negotiating the bends. Fascinating to watch the instructor not only ride for himself but also give commentary on the pupil. Nice work.

  • @elliotsdad06 - Thanks. This system does not work for everyone, so I ask the client if they want to try it. I like it because the guidance....The bike to rider comms is short and simple.

  • Greetings earthling-now what about driving in america?

  • Nice to see you giving the numbering system a go. It's worked well for us at EKAM for a number of years. You can, of course, extend the system into the off-side lane, where track 6 would be just over the centre of the road and track10 is in the gutter on the far off-side!!! On multi-lane carriageways the system goes Lane 1, track 1 to 5, lane 2 track 1 to 5 etc.

  • Interesting... I like to come off the bend and set up for the next bend sooner than the rider does in the first part of the video, but... a tad later than you seem to be recommending in the second part, only because I like to feel that I've cleared the tarmac right to the verge on the exit before I position for the next bend. I'm always worried about the 'dog/missing manhole cover/patch of gravel on the carriageway' scenario, which I'm pretty sure is just advanced paranoia on my part... :-)
