its not over the strings, its under, and its an acoustic guitar pickup, he probably uses it so he doesnt have to use a microphone, it can connect the sound of his guitar straight into the computer or an amp. which me might connect to the computer, so you dont hear background noise.

Maybe it's just to make the strings sound twangier or something... probably not important to the song.

its a pickup, i have one thats about 60years older than that one, almost covers the entire hole and barely works :)

its a pick-up... it picks up the vibrations off of the steel strings and converts them into a soundwave that travels through the wire coming from the pick -up into an amp. it makes the guitar electric/ acoustic. you dont need unless u want to use an amp.
