James Kalm slips in and records a walk through of this exhibition by Gerhard Richter before he is bounced from the gallery. Richter is undoubtedly one of the most highly regarded painters of his generation and the current Godfather of the German Conceptual painting tradition. This show features works created since 2005 and debuts a series of large near monochromatic light gray paintings that represent an approach to Minimalism that further complicates the artists duel approach to his subjects. A room filling multi-panel piece Sinbad uses a technique of poured paint on the back of clear plastic panels and delivers a decorative impact that much previous work avoided.

  • Really enjoyed this one. Quick question James, what technique did you mention that Richter employs? (The plexi glass effect) I couldnt quite hear what you called it. Keep up the great work!!

  • Hinterglassmaleri, it means under-glass- painting, or painting on the back of glass, it's an old folk technique, Kandinsky and Munter used it.

  • Great video...liked the small pieces best. A shame about the biddy who wanted you to put your camera away....BTW, what ever happened to Chris Martin...is he off the art scene in NY?

  • Hey destroyer820,hold on to your hat. I was asked by Chris to recorded about an hour of a lecture/happening that took place last night at the Hunter College grad studio program. Lots of Chris's thoughts history, and music! Give me a couple of days.

  • Loved the pale paintings in the beginning; obviously they weren't easy to capture on film, but they looked gorgeous.

  • Thanks for sharing video but you could leave out the commentary.

  • Great video and commentary James

  • "LAME SLOP" REAL SIMPLE...NO SOUL+

  • And still Richter does speak (see his giant book of statements, interviews called "Writings") and he keeps painting prolifically. He quotes John Cage who says something like " I have nothing to say and I am saying it". Looking at the big picture...with all the seeming contradictions in word and paint he comes out as having a lot of meaning and hope I think.

  • @foxtrapper1972 Not only the art world! The whole world is so! Even you!

  • "The whole art world is one vast scene of pettiness, lies, deceit, depravity, wretchedness, stupidity, nonsense, impudence. It is not worth wasting one word on it" Gerhard Richter 1982

  • When an artists work reaches 'collectors' of that level the reception of the work is tightly controlled by both misplaced power and the cultural need to protect what might be important to future generations. I actually believe that some artists believe in what they do, always. I'm an optimist:)thanks

  • Even though I don't get Richter's art, he doesn't strike me as being a marketing person at all. If you read his thoughts on painting, you realise how profound the man is. Also, money is not necessarily bad to art. It is a cliché and, if anything else, it certainly helps the artist to work in good conditions and to concentrate on his art...

  • Well I agree with you that Richter is sincere compared to Hirst. But let's face it, art at that level is commodified, once the Art Powers get you into the Machine, who cares what the work is for the purpose of selling and promotion. For an artist to function as an artist in this environment is quite an achievement and I don't know if I believe its possible to be true to your vision there, anyway. Is that cynical or just a cold hard look at the weirdness of big art and money in our time? thanks
