WONG:
It's a big event with a lot of sound. Up to 40-thousand people flock to Glasgow for the 61st World Pipe Championships. Let's have a look.
STORY:
Around 40 thousand piping enthusiasts flocked to Glasgow Green on to watch the annual World Pipe Band Championships. Running since 1947, it's the biggest bagpipe event, bringing pipers and drummers from around the globe. Bands from 15 different nations including Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan were represented.
Organizers claim this year is the biggest yet, attracting 221 bands - amounting to 8,000 musicians, as well as dancers and Highland games competitors and bringing some 10 million pounds in revenue to the city.
[Ian Embelton, CEO, Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association]:
"I think the bagpipes are not quite a hobby, they are not a pastime; they are an obsession. If you speak to any pipers especially even drummers they are consumed by their hobby and passion. They practice three or four a week and many of the bands who are here have been practicing for two years to come to the world championships in Glasgow. If you are going to be raising 30 thousand pounds to come from North America for one days piping is really must be something pretty special and I am pleased to say it is."
Bands performed in qualifying rounds in the morning. Then in the afternoon the grades top bands performed again to determine the winner.
All bands battled to snatch the title from the 2007 winners, Northern Irish Group, The Field Marshal Montgomery. In the end the Canadians took home the biggest prize 'The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band' won its fifth world championship.
