http://www.isukatmath.com is your hub for math help and resources. In this video, Doc talks about textbooks...why they don't do what they're supposed to and how that puts you behind.
I was just thinking how bad math books are! I downloaded 2 diferent e-books on complex analysis and the complex number plane, and most of the equations seem like voodoo due to having very little in the way of grammatical explanation.
Your video series is very inspirational. I teach English in South Korea and we are pushed to publish books all the time because it always saves costs or turns a profit, but our students education suffers from the use of these mass-produced books that are inferior to the classics. I will be posting links to your videos on my blog once it is up and running. Thank you for your videos!
i only have 1 thing too say not all textbooks suck but some books the examples so much easier than the exercises in some books what does that prepare you for? they shouldnt all be easy just 1 increasing level i totally agree that it is impossible to read it like a story book and just understand it all strangs book dont suck strangs book is cool and his lectures on MIT are very good too
People think that textbooks are written by a genius. If its not in the book, its wrong. my teacher gives me shortcuts that are way different than what is in the book.
Dude I want you as my teacher, I say the same thing to my teacher, that it's a scam, and she gets kind of angry, because she doesn't think it is we had a debate on the course, we had a to write a worksheet, "Why or why not is textbook a scam?" it was a three-four sentence thing. She thinks that it keeps updating because the material evolves over time, like Science.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. That is why I torrent my books now. Not only do they make new books every 2-3 years, but they are basically 99.7% the same as the previous text as far as lessons and problems go. The only real difference is how they arrange the chapters and they might change a word here and there, add a new problem here and there but that is it.
catch on fast enough. They expect you to know it all the first time and ONLY the first time, and then remember it all at the end of the year. It's ridiculous.
it differently than the textbook does. I mean, why give us those money-stealing books in the first place if they're not going to teach us right? All kids assume the book will be your guide and help you learn self-sufficiently, until they learn the hard truth that this is not the case. It forces you to get help all the time, thus rendering students to depend on others more than they need to and not be able to figure things out on their own. Really, they're digging graves for those of us who can't
yet another truth about life ive had to learn the hard way... and found some1 on utube has made a vid on it (who shares the same view)...
