This video recording starts out with the Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) root ball behind the Carbon River Ranger station in Mt. Rainier National Park. The root ball is currently about 3 metres (10 feet) high but I'm sure its diameter was much greater when it fell during a November 2007 windstorm - taking some smaller neighboring trees with it too.
The Carbon River ranger station, itself, sits at an elevation of 518 metres (1,700 feet) and is at the end of the road that winds its way through Wilkeson and Carbonado, Washington State.
