CHAPTER 12


"Ri-Rihanna. We ride!" He said trying to sound macho.
"You can press that button now Nick.." Hazel suggested poking his forhead.
They sat around the living room taking it in turns to sing. At about 8:30 Hazels phone rang.
"Hello? Hazel here!"
"Hazel. It's Geff. We'll be home in about an hour."
"Okay."
"See you then." Geff said and Hazel hung up.
"I'm gonna do tea now."
"You need a hand Hazel?" Nick offered.
"Uh, yeah, sure. If you don't mind."
"I'll help you sweetie." Leif offered.
"Uh, my name is Hazel. You need to be home in like fifteen minutes ago."
"Oh crap." Leif said. This earned him a very dirty look from Denise.
"I'll take you home if you want?" Kevin offered.
"Nope. It's cool man. I'm only two blocks away. I'll walk."
And with that he was gone.
"Hey, uh Aaron. You may want to tell your friends to come up for air by the way." Hazel suggested, reminding Aaron that his friends were still beside him, it's not like he forgot though, how could he? They were practically eating eachothers heads.
"In the kitchen Hazel and Nick set to work cooking a flawless dinner. "So, Nicholas. Tell me, am I the only one who actually likes Leif here?" Nick looked at her, he thought about lieing but decided the truth was the best course of action. All he did was nod.
Angrily Hazel finished making dinner and she stormed up to her bedroom.

Twenty minutes later there was a knock on her door.
"Can I come in?" Nick asked inviting himself in anyway.
"Of course." Hazel breathed and tapped the bed next to where she was sitting.
"Look, what you asked before. I didn't lie."
"I know. I just wish I knew why everybody hates him."
"It's because he's with you. Nobody here thinks Leif is good enough, including Frankie. Truth is, if he were with any other girl on the planet and just another friend of yours we wouldn't care at all. But he's not with any other girl, he's with you and for that, he must be hated. He's with you Hazel. Little Hazel, the same girl who once told her mother that her best friend was really an angel sent down from heaven to watch over her and protect her. The same Hazel who once told me when she grew up she was going to pray three times a day, one for each of the wonderful things in her life- her family, her best friend and God. My Hazel. My Hazel. The beautiful and talented young girl who made me want to be a better friend, who gave me strenght through everything. You, I've hurt you so many times that it's hurting me, and through it all you've stood by me. I just can;t bare to see you get hurt again, and they can't either."
"Nicholas, listen. I will always be hurt. That's just part of me now, I was so depressed for so long that I couldn't leave it behind, that hurt is a part of me now and I don't mind it too much. That doesn't matter though, I've got something more wonderful that hapiness. I've got you. I know that no matter what, when you're a part of my life I'm safe, whether you're sitting next to me, or on the other side of the world I'm safe."
"Someone call Hallmark." Nick said wiping a tear from Hazels cheek. Hazel laughed and looked at her best friend. He was amazing. She realised then and there, for so long what she had been denying.
She was in love with him.
