Julian Burnside, Queens Council, addressed a 6th anniversary commemoration of the Tampa Incident in Melbourne, Australia on August 26, 2007, next to the Sandridge Bridge on Southbank.

After reading a statement by former Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, Burnside addressed the crowd in this speech attacking the Howard Government on Refugees, the Pacific Solution, apologising and reparations to aboriginal people, members of the Stolen Generation, and in expanding police and ASIO powers as an attack on our civil liberties and fair legal process.

As well as Julian Burnside, a Wecome to Country ceremony was performed by the One Fire Dance Troup. Several other music and dance performances entertained the crowd.

The event was organised by the Refugee Action Collective of Victoria, http://www.rac-vic.org

  • Gee. Do you think this guy votes Liberal ?

There is always an agenda and an unbalanced view put out....

  • John Howard got a family friendly boot in the arse.

  • mass immigration?? fewer than 1,000 people a year arrive by boat (fewer than 100 in 2006-07!) to seek asylum, but we take 130,000 new permanent migrants every year. if you want to talk numbers, don't talk about asylum seekers!

  • We need to keep our own culture and way of life. Unfortunately mass immigration will make that impossible.
