  • Hi, altha2008.

"These people" is my company Nabers Group, and we're actually one of the only Solo 401k providers in existence that allows our accountholders to manage their account themselves.

We do not serve the administrator, trustee, or any other roles... we instead empower our clients to run and manage the account and plan themselves.

Most clients find it quite easy to do.

So, in essence, I agree with you that it is desirable to manage a 401k yourself with an unlimited platform. :-)

  • SEP IRA vs. Solo 401k - great question! The SEP carries similarly high contribution limits, but with the SEP IRA you have to pay yourself more and pay more taxes to make your contributions than you would with a Solo 401k. I'll make a brief video showing this soon.

Also, there are other Solo 401k unique benefits, as outlined in this 5 part video series, that are not enjoyed by the SEP IRA.

  • I will relook at your solo 401k video #5 and re-review the unique benefits of the 401k solo plan. I have been considering setting up a SEP-IRA and then after some reading it dawned on my that I ought to set up a self directed version of the SEP-IRA. Now after watching our videos I think I might be better suited for a solo 401k plan since I am self employed with no employees. I look forward to watching your new video when it is released comparing the solo401k to self directed SEP.

  • By the way, I should mention that everyone who is contemplating getting out the dismal stock market should watch these videos... I look forward to your reply to my previous message.

Oh, one quick question, why wouldn't someone who is self employed just use a SEP vs. the solo 401k?

  • Great job Jeff. Thanks for putting together the solo 401k videos together. Do you have a blog on the self directed IRA or solo401k where I can learn more about your company and about self directed investing?
