  • @southamptonsheroes Any particular reason for that slur or is it just because you felt like it, and may I say I actually do not have an intelectual disability which is usually what people consider 'mental retardation' just so you know. lol.

  • Sure, it can save our time instead of waiting to be served in a long queue. There are of course disadvantages of self service checkouts and I can find some on tWikipedia (there's reference attached to it too):

  • @mjay22 This is an old vid, I'm glad you found it, it's a good topic, I got flamed for this post back in the day. I think evidience is mounting for the job loss assosciated with self serve checkouts, at most of my local supermarkets the expresslanes have been reduced to just 2 cashiers and the rest is replaced by self serves.

  • Be comforted by the fact that, if and when a job is lost in a store, a new job in the technology manufacturer's factory or office opens up.

  • @kenbinney Interesting point, but its usually kids that work on the checkouts and they dont have the training to work at the technology manufacturer's factory, then again training the youth workforce could be a very good idea. I like you're line of thinking.

  • Good topic!

I like self service because I have social anxiety - some days, I would rather not have to talk to a stranger ;)

  • LOVE THE SELF SERVICE CHECK OUTS!!! Big W rocks, always use it there. So cool, straight through and out of there! I am not going shopping to socialise, I go to get items that I need, so it suits me fine! :-)

  • So while your standing there supervising, what happened to the other people that six self serve checkouts replaced. One Attendant to a half dozen checkouts......and no one lost their jobs lol

  • Self serve checkouts are actually heaps easy to use. There is always a self service attendant next to the self serve checkouts therefore no one will lose their jobs.

I work as a self serve attendant at woolworths, it has cut the lines at checkouts, and people love using it once they have learnt how to.

You should do more research on things before posting this crap.

  • we have some self check outs in Ireland but because there is tax on plastic bags there is always a cashier at them to sell the bags there is also a security gaurd, talk about self defeating

  • Thanks for the comment, at my local woolies after 8pm all the express checkouts are shut down and only the self serve ones remain along with the larger trolley checkouts. I think it's a pity people are too impatient to wait in a queue at woolies these days, so impatient they want to use a machine over a person, it truly is a funny old world.
