Greetings! Tonight I am fixing Sloppy Joe's . I don't like Sloppy Joe's. It has never really been one of my favorite things to eat. I think I may have suffered trauma at the hands of the elementary school lunch lady! : ( In any case, this is my version of the classic favorite. My mom used to make them, but she often would use the seasoning packet that McCormick makes. I like them that way too, but the from scratch method is the best, because you know exactly what you are putting in it. Have you ever read the ingredients on the back of the packet? Even worse, the canned Sloppy Joe sauce is just garbage, in my own opinion. You already have everything you need to make this in your fridge and pantry. You are really just mixing a bunch of condiments together to make a really nice sweet and savory sauce to mix in with that pound of ground round you have thawing in the sink (lets be real, does anyone REALLY thaw meat in the fridge?) In any case, this recipe is totally adaptable. Don't like the mushrooms? Leave them out. Don't want the celery? Fine! I wouldn't leave out the mushrooms or the green peppers though, cause those flavors are really what Sloppy Joe's are all about, well, that and the brown sugar and the tomato base. I used the tomatoes and green chilies as an experiment, I liked them, but would probably leave them out next time and opt for an extra splash of cider vinegar along with about ¼ cup more brown sugar. This is all about your own taste, use my recipe as a basis for your own, a guideline if you will.

Well, enough of my ranting diatribe. I hope you try this and I hope you enjoy it. As always, Happy Eating! Noreen

  • Looks soooooo good. I wonder if you can, 'can' the stuff for later consumption? hmmmm.

  • @CHEECHAKOSMONTANA I think that would be a great idea. we have plans to can Ricks spaghetti sauce and chili. Sloppy joes right on the shelf? GREAT! All you need is some heat and some buns and you have dinner in a flash!

  • Hey Noreen, why add in onion and garlic powder when you added in fresh garlic and onions??

  • @IronPatriotTN Thanks for the questions! I always add the garlic and onion powder along with the fresh versions because I like the added depth of flavor that the spices impart to the dish. The flavor of the powders is much more intense. With the onion powder it actually adds an intense sweetness to the dish that is good and not overpowering. Just an additional layer of flavor. Thanks for watching and commenting. Noreen

  • Looks great and something quick when you are in a hurry

  • Awesome! Homemade is always better.

  • Hell if the dog is waiting for his portion, then you know it has to be good!

  • Oh man, I'm making this tomorrow! minus the mushrooms =p

  • Oh man, I'm making this tomorrow!

  • This is probably becuase I literally just smoke a massive Joint in the bathroom, but this is one of the greatest channels i have ever seen on Youtube. I love you Whats For Dinner lady.

  • the snot sucking is not appetizing...couldnt continue watching after twice...

  • That ketchup is WONDERFUL!

  • I live in Cincinnati and we do like our loose meat sandwiches but I think it is Illinois that is really known for it. I make a dish with just really fine ground beef mixed in with fried potatoes (made with sliced sweet onions and bell peppers) seasoned REALLY well or it tastes bland. I LOVE it.. It is especially easy on weeknights when you are busy and don't have many options.

  • Hey Noreen :o)

I don't like the canned either. Thanks for telling us about the ketchup, I was actually thinking of trying to make my own but this will do. I like your brown sugar touch...when I make meatloaf, I add all kinds of stuff and I add a bit of molasses to it. I think it adds a nice bit of flavor and a bit of carmelizing to the edges...yummy
