For military records in particular, there are Draft Cards (now online) and there are for soldiers in earlier wars--Spanish American War, Indian Wars, Civil War---the Military Service Records, and Pension Files.
The pension files often provide useful family day on soldieres. Service Records are good ways to confirm military service and provide physical descrptions, and enlistment information. Most of these are not microfilmed, however.
