BOSTON - Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., HC-144 aircraft crews fly over the Atlantic Ocean south of Cape Cod to broadcast a notice of incoming weather in advance of Hurricane Sandy Oct. 26, 2012. To put it simply... VHF is a line of sight radio signal. From ground level it will travel a certain distance usually 10 to 20 miles unless repeated from another platform. From 1500' it will go 50 miles and so forth as the higher you go. Limits of the curve of the earth put limits on those radios.
