@AnthonyDubya The words are: Ashreichem Yisroel! Lifnei mi atem mitaharin? Mi lifnei m'taheir es'chem? Avichem shebashamayim!... V'yomer, 'Mikveh Yisroel HaShem', ma mikveh m'taheir hat'mei'im, af Hakadosh Baruch Hu mi'taheir es Yisroel.
yours is a common misconception. yiddish has developed NOT FROM GERMAN BUT PARALLEL TO IT. after the destruction of the second temple large group of hebrews went to western europe. hebrew was considered too holy to use for everyday, so they embraced a local dialect and adapted it. yiddish is as old as english.
Yiddish is a middle German language. I'm not sure anyone knows that. Most would be confused because Jews speak it and Yiddish uses a Hebrew derived alphabet, but these are descendants of German Jews who speak a language that is a Hebrew version of German. I'm not Jewish but am interested in linguistics, specifically Germanic.

The departure of Yiddish from German is very similar to that where the Amish did. My father could speak quite well with Amish in Pennsylvania.
