Fresh water, they are bottum feeders, and not to be feared *unless the fish is jumping into the air, as they do, and you are in a small boat, and cannot swim ;-)*

Before the American settlers allmost made sturgeon extinct, they useto be so pletiful that their oil was harvested simularly to how whale oil was harvested. They also are known to live over 100 years. I am not sure how they can count the number of years that it has lived but 150 years *was* not extremely uncommon. They do not lay eggs untill they are 14 years old. Happily their population is slowly climbing in the st Lorance river, inspite of polution.

Thanks for the kind words guys! We were in the Winnipeg River, Manitoba. As for these fish being small, you have white sturgeon in California, we have lake sturgeon here in Manitoba. Totally different species so we're not comparing apples to apples here, lol. The 72.5"er is the largest fish caught on video in Manitoba, and only a handful have ever been caught by rod and reel larger than that in the province.

Thanks everybody, the fish was caught and released on the Winnipeg River system in Manitoba, Canada on the Manitoba opener. Bait is pretty simple with nothing more than salted minnows and crawlers on the hook. Had a great season with many fish in the 54-60" range this year! Couldn't come close to beating the 6 footer though, haha.
