I don't understand why this guy is purposely starting fires to the right of this ditch...can anyone explain?

Just came back home for a few days vacation when all this kicked off. Wish I could of stayed longer. Had to go back to work in California(Marines). Good luck guys. git er done.

Sure, it is fire set along a fire break to help widen the break to burn all the grass / fuel along the break to help prevent unburned grass from burning later and jumping the fire break and creating a new fire. This also creates a safety zone for the firefighters to retreat back to if the fire makes a run at them or blows up on them.
