http://jeffsalzensteintennis.com ... one of my BEST tennis tips great on how Andy Roddick can learn from Patrick Rafter (and me) on how to volley like a champ. Use this tip to help your tennis. Using correct volley technique will help you stick your volleys. Keeping your racquet head up high on the volleys will get you one step closer to hitting volleys like Federer and Rafter. Keeping the racquet closer to your head during your tennis volley will help you take your volleys to the next level.

Former ATP Top 100, USTA High Performance Coach and Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, Jeff Salzenstein, reveals a cutting edge technique for the forehand volley and how Andy Roddick can improve it. For more FREE INFO also check out

  • Well, I'm practicing tennis and this technique is really helpful. Thank you

  • @sonpro2108 You're welcome!

  • I really don't see Salzenstein "twisting" his wrist, or "raising his arm" appreciably. It seems more like he is keeping his wrist ahead of the racket face after contacting the ball. That keeps the volley solid and avoids the chop that he was criticizing Roddick for. Salzenstein exaggerates the "high" follow through a little, but that main principle keeps the volley driving out instead of floating.

  • @edenstore Agreed!

  • Hey Jeff, I've been watching your videos for a few months, but never commented much.

I have a question. I play tennis for my school and I always flinch when volleys are hit at me. Also, I don't know if I should keep the elbows at my side or out infront me me, straight. I can't seem to catch the ball infront of me. Any help? Other videos don't seem to work for me and your videos are clearly better.

  • I have a great serve and im very good with base line shootouts. but when i get to the net. 9 times out of ten i just comletely mess u the volley. i liked this video but i could really follow how you were doing your volley too differently than roddick. i can see the upward flourish at the end but the stroke still just looks like your coming down on the ball. ill re watch a coule times but.. im not sure. no offense intended of course

  • And myself tried this method.. more straighter racket for volley.. hmmm, for me it doesn't work for me too well ball tend to go out.. and low ball it is very hard to hit.. goes straight to net...

Well, i don't know if we call this modern Volley.. i mean Federer doesn't finish the racket high after volley..... A lot of people do not talk about but for Volley having "Feel" is such a key since we can't put top spin for volley. Feel and touch is going to be extremely key...

  • Suzuki Takao Pro from Japan talked about same thing.. Well, make this simple.. What he is trying to say is that volley more straight rather than hit high to down.. Suzuki said same thing..

He said because of open racket face, even you hit straight you will get back spin. Just like hitting Sandwedge on Golf.. So the end result racket will come up... Well, i did try this.. but if you watch great volleyer like Brayn brothers Federer, watch their racket, it goes high to down. There is no doubt.

  • @Bigserve134 Rafter would do juts fine in this era with Serve and Volley

  • The volley is a lost art because of the weight players hit with now and the ball moves so violently in 3 dimensions that it makes volley an impossible task. Think about serve and volleying against Nadal...Murray tried it a few months ago and got hammered. Then just a few weeks ago Murray held the baseline and beat Nadal.

  • @TennisCoachTV Ok I know now what you are trying to convey and you are right. Roddick is done he should have modernized his strokes ten years ago, even though Roddick has improved his mental game, footwork, physical fitness level, balance, and touch he is a lost cause. I dont know if he is just being stubborn or simply unable to mordernize his stroke but it has killed his career. Todd Martin modernized his strokes recently and is playing some excellent tennis now.

  • @Bigserve134 only Rafter did this...he volleyed pretty well:) The tour does know how to volley now. It's a lost art.
