  • Gotta love this man, and not just because he is so incredibly funny, but he is so clever, in several ways, such a cosmopolitan, and so entirely his own person :)

  • (cont) Just for a small impression: one of the oldest Dutch phrases (actually a scribble in a book that was found in an English monastery) was "Hebban olla vogala nestas hagunnan hinase hic antha thu, uuat unbinnan uue nu", meaning "All birds have started (building their) nests, except for me and you, what are we waiting for". In modern Dutch, the phrase would be "Alle vogels zijn (hun) nesten begonnen (te bouwen), behalve ik en jij, waar/wat wachten we nog (op)".

  • @AFanOfAmbience Old Saxon probably sounded quite a lot different from modern Dutch- the further back in time one looks, the more alike English and Dutch (as well as other germanic languages) seem to be, but reading ancient Dutch is pretty hard. As for Frankish, I am not sure- my impression is that the French language has changed much less over the centuries then... well, at least then English or Dutch. (Frankish, by the way, already was a Romanic language, not Saxon)

  • Hoe genant om deze Nederlandse malloot Eddie Izzard te laten interviewen...

  • The reporter sounds exactly like Eddie impersonating scrabble before language

  • The Low Franconian languages have always fascinated me. Isn't it true that this was what Old Saxon and even Old Frankish sounded like? I know Old English and Old Frisian were once mutually intelligible to one another...

  • Oh wat vind ik het jammer dat hij zo'n oude kop gekregen heeft, echt. Ik vond 'm zo lekker..
