Laie is a community with a housing crisis. Without new housing solutions to meet the needs of the present, current and future generations in Laie will continue to go elsewhere to find housing and work—leaving the future culture and character of Laie to the few that can afford to buy homes there. A balanced approach will not only make the community more sustainable, but will help it survive. Keeping families in Laie and Koolau Loa will help sustain the respect for culture, character, beauty and history of our states island communities. Providing homes that allow for the growth of BYU-Hawaii and the Polynesian Cultural Center will help improve the balance between economic, social and community and environment priorities. Housing—including affordable housing—will help meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
