@ceri118 Actually I think Stephen Hawking is essentially not knowledgeable in Metaphysics and neither is his co-author. Competent critics have remarked just that (see, for instance, The Economist's review of his recent book). So, for instance, he seems to be unable to recognize that Physics is entirely dependent on causality. The day you conclude that all physical events had a beginning (even if his conjecture about ex-nihilo creation is correct), you have to give up causality. Me thinks.
For a man of faith he sure knows a lot about science , God of the gaps springs to mind. I don't fully understand Hawkings explanation , but I'd put my 'Faith' in what he has to say over a book made up by some people thousands of years ago trying to do there best guess at how they came to be !
