Check out the full trip report at http://multicolouredplanet.com/Grundlefly/Mount_Shasta ... Shasta is a proper mountain challenge packing all of the big peak thrills and torments into a 2-day extravaganza. You don't need a guide to show you the way so long as you have reasonable gear, orientation, preparation and a healthy dose of common sense.

  • Is the orientation required by the forrest service?

  • @boraboy4ever - you were expected to have a chat with the ranger to check on the weather forecast before you set off. I forget what the official line is.

  • wow, going down looked like a lot more fun then going up!! I'm planning the hike next summer, any advise?

  • I think you'll enjoy - she's a beautiful mountain, and if you're new to this type of climbing then it should be a proper challenge.

Advice - take the climb easy over two days (some try to bag it in one), take thermals for the camping (it can get cold up there at night), traverse / zig zag up the steep slopes (e.g. Red Banks and Misery Hill). We tried going straight up but tired ourselves out and the zig zaggers overtook us in the end! Oh and remember your camera for the summit shot!

  • how come mt shasta looks like it has two mountains and where is the crater? i mean is it buried?

  • Congratulation!

  • Great video guys - thanks for sharing

  • Did you get my previous comments? I think youtube deletes it if text resembles a web link.

Do a google search on 'shasta mountain climbing equipment hire' and have a look at the Fifth Season guys and they give a page of hire prices for equipment.

As for ski poles, prob not. You'll most likely want an ice axe in one hand for stability and possibility of self-arrests. Good luck

  • Yes, you can rent a lot of the equipment, specifically the helmet, boots, crampons, ice axe. Not sure about a light though - you may need to buy your own head torch (e.g. Petzl) and you will most likely need your own waterproof / cold clothing and camping gear, stove, etc. They do give you a poo bag with a target mat and kitty litter amusingly. Enjoy.
