The Grateful Dead did this twice in 1988, sticking closely to the Beatles' version. Bob Weir has played it frequently with Ratdog and with Weir/Wasserman, as well as with The Dead.

Blackbird" is a Beatles song from double-disc album The Beatles (also known as The White Album). Blackbird was written by Paul McCartney, who was inspired to write this while in Scotland as a reaction to racial tensions escalating in America in the spring of 1968

McCartney revealed on PBS's Great Performances (Paul McCartney: Chaos and Creation at Abbey Road), aired in 2006, that the guitar accompaniment for Blackbird was inspired by Bach's Bourrée in E minor, a well known classical guitar piece. As kids, he and George Harrison tried to learn Bourrée as a "show off" piece. Bourrée is distinguished by melody and bass notes played simultaneously on the upper and lower strings. McCartney adapted a segment of Bourrée as the opening of "Blackbird," and carried the musical idea throughout the song.

The first night Linda Eastman, who would later become his wife, slept over, McCartney played it to the fans camped outside his house

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free

Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night
Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free
You were only waiting for this moment to be free
You were only waiting for this moment to be free

  • What are you talking about? Sgt Peppers was hardly tailor made for the public? They made that album for themselves... and they made some of the best records of all time you cannot blame them for making money for being so fucking good?!

  • I swear Brent sang "take these fucking lines and learn to sing"

  • 0:32. Did one of them say take these broken wings and learn to shit? I like the Beatles version better. Grateful Dead, still a good band tho :)

  • Boy do I remember this stand. 4 shows in 5 days. That was almost TOO much, and the last time they played Alpine. Every Summer, the high point was the trek to Alpine, some of our fondest memories of the 80's. Jerry's comeback in '87, people parked all over the golf course. There had to be 50,000 people jammed in there. I remember being under the pavilion and turning around during "Around and Around" and seeing people with their backs against that wall. And the heat of '88! What times those were!

  • Respond to this video... ALPINE VALLEY.....IT ALWAYS ROCKED!

  • @memonk11 I found some crazy highlights during these four shows. this one wasn`t one of them.
