"Olive Tree" (english)

From October 14th - November 3rd, 2008, Barefoot Workshops led a three-week program in the West Bank, teaching Palestinian organizations how to write, shoot, produce, and edit, Public Service Announcements (PSAs), to raise awareness about important social issues.

Twelve PSAs were produced on such topics as: labor law, honor killings, Palestinian land rights, community betterment, political unity between parties, gender relations, volunteerism and youth empowerment. The aim of the workshop was to foster greater civic participation, activism, and debate in the region of the Middle East by teaching civil society organizations how to create messages that can improve their societies from within. The workshop was supported by the United States Government Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), and Creative Associates International.
This 30-second PSA created by Combatants for Peace in Hebron, begins with the image of a Palestinian woman speaking to an olive tree in an olive tree grove. The olive tree is blessed, she says. We should preserve it like our ancestors did over the generations. Her speech is interrupted by the sounds and images of an approaching tractor. The message comes on screen, Stop the Violence. There is room for Peace. The PSA ends with the image of Israeli peace volunteers from Combatants for Peace, working to help the woman to plant olive trees in the grove.
