Cadd9 = C E G D
C9 = C E G Bb D

Notice how the Cadd9 chord is ONLY the major chord with the 9th added. That's why is called an "ADD" 9.

However, a C9 chord includes the 7th note. So, its a dominant chord (seventh chord) with the 9th note added.

The only difference between the 9 and add9 is that the 9th chord has the 7th note in it.

Is this is confusing, then watch the video - you'll understand it, I promise.

Whenever its a "Letter and Number (example: C9, F11, D7, Bb13, etc.)" then it ALWAYS refers to the chord being a dominant chord with the seventh note in it.

Whenever its an "add" chord (Cadd9, Fadd11, Bbadd13, etc.) it refers to the chord being a normal major triad, but simply add the tension in the chord name. So a Cadd13 would be C E G, but with an A (the 13th) on top of the chord.

  • @beakf1 B would be the major 7th. Bb is just plain ole 7th and that is the tone you need.

  • i might be going mad but i think the b flat should be b in the c9 chord.if its embelished from the c major scale which has no sharps or flats :)

  • i love the way at 4 minutes 56 your mouth is closed but yooh carry on talking hehe :)

  • @waltribeiro sweet this was just what i was looking for.the b flat is the 7th right,and going by what the guy psychopathtoine says above yooh can do it with out the 5th or g note :D

  • you explained it great!!!
