Hardly what the author had described: "A tall woman, with a beautiful figure, which some member of the family had once compared to a heathen goddess..."
-
I see what you mean about Irene, she is a touch masculine.

why is everyone so effing ugly in this series?

If only that meeting never happened, it would have saved everyone a lot of grief. :(

awkward starring match

Actually, I think Gina McKee is playing Irene exactly right. Irene is gentle and weak, easily suppressed. She's a perfect victim for the bullying Soames. A more spirited woman would have clunked him upside the head early on, and been done with him. And before that she would have clunked her wicked stepmother, who was threatening to not share Irene's father's money with her.

I love how they're discussing something so personal in a gentlemen's club. No wonder London's talking about them. I guess they can't blame the aunts for this one.
I totally agree, she is not convincing and really lacks emotional depth as an actress in this role. Amanda Root on the other hand has been my favourite since her role in Persuasion. This saga is new to me and Im really enjoying it! What would we do without our historical romances!

Thanks for posting. This is shallow, but if only they got someone more appealing (more beautiful) as Irene.
