London Bangla honoured with Mayors award

London Bangla bilingual free weekly have been rewarded with two members of the editorial team receiving a Civic Award from Tower Hamlets council.

On Tuesday, Editor Shah Yousuf and Executive Editor Emdad Rahman both received commendations and an elegant glass piece from Mayor Abdullah Salique. The highly regarded awards were gained in the category of outstanding contribution to community development.

This is in recognition of your outstanding voluntary service to the community, said the honourable Mayor.

I am best pleased for Emdad and Shah, said Deputy Mayor Councillor Ahmed Omer.

This category was a very competitive one and both Emdad and Shah proved to be very deserving candidates. Emdad and myself are honoured to be standing amongst such giants of the community and it gives us tremendous pleasure and delight to accept this award in recognition of our humble efforts, said Shah.

At London Bangla we are a small team of volunteers, that work to serve our community by providing what we see as a service.

The road has been very rocky and we have had to deal with uncountable obstacles along the way. One thing has remained the same, we have always been dedicated to our aims.

Wed like to thank the rest of our team for their tireless efforts and also like to say a big thank you on behalf of us both This recognition would not be possible had all parts of this machine not worked so well collectively.

Emdad thanked the whole London Bangla team past and present and added; I am best pleased by this recognition. We will continue to serve the community to the best of our abilities and for this I request continued and wholesale prayers and wellwishes from both young and old members our community.

Fellow award winners on the night included Dr Anna Livingstone, Bethnal Green resident and community activist Atik Miah, youth worker Margaret Tracey, Paul Kelly for his work with the disabled and 101 year old World War 2 veteran Frank Whipple, the oldest carer in Britain.
