Pianist Johnny Maddox's first record, Dot 1005, was also one of the first on the famous Dot label. This record is very interesting because it shows a side of Johnny that you almost can't hear anywhere else. The great ragtime composer Charles L. Johnson was particularly fond of this recording of his "Crazy Bone Rag," telling Johnny, "You asked me for pointers on how to play ragtime, I'm inclined to think you could give me some instead, in my opinion you know your stuff in that respect." At the insistence of Dot Records founder Randy Wood, Johnny left out the trio of "Crazy Bone Rag" and included part of Percy Wenrich's "Crab Apples." Charles L. Johnson didn't seem to mind!

  • Nice post...thanks. But you might want to re-check your Dot Records research, as 1005 was not the label's very first release: 1001 & 1002 were by George Toon & the Tennessee Ramblers, 1003 by The Fairfield Four, and 1004 by Big Jeff.

  • @MusicProf78 Wow! Thanks for the information. I knew there might have been one before, but not four! Where did you find the records?

  • @adamgswanson Initially I did a search in the online collection of old Billboard magazines that you can access via Google Books and found some early Dot record ads that listed their initial releases. However I just now discovered a website that displays the label's singles discography. Google the following words: singles discography dot-abc
