Evolution Revolution

"Evolution/Revolution" is a great climbing video, no matter what criteria you want to use. In it's one hour it features, among other things, one 9a/5.14d, one Fb 8b+/V14, eight Fb 8b/V13 and, as a contrast, a 5.12d offwidth... Now that's quality! The film is divided into three chapters. The first, "Out of Africa", takes us to South Africa with Klem Loskot, the second to Little Cottonwood Canyon in the US and the third, "Climbing in the nineties", to different boulder problems and routes around Europe. Starring are a few of the best boulderers Europe, or the world for that matter, has to offer; Klem Loskot, Markus Bock, Toni Lamprecht and Werner Thon. Often when you see a video of someone ascending a hard route or problem it looks easy. You get no feeling for the amount of effort it has taken to finally pull it off. The part about Klem's bouldering in Rocklands, SA, really gives you that feeling. As the date of departure draws closer he desperately struggles to make his problems. Fb 8b is definitely not easy, no matter what your name is... A totally different kind of struggle is Kim Czizmazia's first female ascent of the offwidth "Trench warfare", 5.12d, in Little Cottonwood Canyon. You can't help seeing the truth in the statements that it's "every climbers nightmare" or that it "packs 1000 feet of climbing into 35 horizontal ones". But hey, who said climbing has to be beautiful? The third and final part shows the ability of the top Euros today. Udo Neuman really knows what hard climbing is about, and also how to make this visible on film.
