Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell are the credited songwriters of You Are My Sunshine. Davis bought the song and rights from Paul Davis and put his own name on it, a practise not uncommon in the pre- World War II music business.
Two versions of "You Are My Sunshine" were recorded and released prior to Jimmie Davis's. The first was recorded for Bluebird Records on August 22, 1939 by The Pine Ridge Boys (Marvin Taylor and Doug Spivey). The second was recorded for Decca Records on September 13, 1939 by The Rice Brothers Gang. The version by Jimmie Davis was recorded for Decca Records on February 5, 1940.
"You Are My Sunshine" was extremely popular with my family around the campfire when I was a small boy in the 1940s.
(F) The other night dear as I lay sleeping
I dreamt I (Bb) held you in my (F) arms
When I a (Bb) woke dear I was mis (F) taken
and I hung my (C7) head and (F) cried
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me (Bb) happy when skies are (F) grey
You'll never (Bb) know dear how much I (F) love you
Please don't take my (C7) sunshine a (F) way
I'll always love you and make you happy
if you will (Bb) only say the (F) same
But if you (Bb) leave me to love a (F) nother
you'll regret it (C7) all one (F) day
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me (Bb) happy when skies are (F) grey
You'll never (Bb) know dear how much I (F) love you
Please don't take my (C7) sunshine a (F) way
You told me once dear you truly loved me
and no one (Bb) else could come be (F) tween
But now you (Bb) left me and love a (F) nother
You have shattered (C7) all my (F) dreams
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me (Bb) happy when skies are (F) grey
You'll never (Bb) know dear how much I (F) love you
Please don't take my (C7) sunshine a (F) way
I was just wondering though, what kind of strumming pTtern you used? I've only just started out on the uke, and I just can't seem to get my head around the strumming. The way you strum in this sounds really good!
