For more survival info and great discussions go to www.wildsurvive.com, the best survival forum on the net. Here's a short vid on how to make an atlatl. This version is not meant for general use, but rather as a hunting alternative for those who are lost in the forest, or who just want to have some fun with a weapon that's over 20,000 years old.

  • have you hunted and made kills with this before

  • @jodylale I believe in humane hunting which means creating the least amount of pain when taking an animal for food. The atlatl, is easy to make and effective, tho it is nowhere near as humane as a bow which can be made infinitely more powerful and accurate. I generally use them for target practice and only hunt with bows over 50lbs or rifles.

  • for string i weave together long strips of plant fibber

  • @98Areeb Plant fiber works great. I've recently uploaded a vid on string making if you're interested.

  • for darts pieces of bamboo work great they already have notches in the end and can easily have a head fixed into them

  • @mikawillpwnu Bamboo is awesome as a material and is literally nature's fiberglass. Unfortunately it doesn't grow wild all over the world so if you're in North America or Europe you won't likely find any. Hence the reason I don't use it in my vids. It's too "easy" of a material to use and to "hard" to find.

  • hey cool, in the conquest of the americas, the atle atle and the sling were the main wepons aztecs used to break the spaniards armor, more accurate than a bow n arrow

  • He doesn't have a weak arm. the power of the throw comes from the flexibility of the atlatl and the snap of your wrist. the accuracy comes from your arm. you don't just whip your arm around like you are throwing a ball. It's a rough atlatl, so it might not be as good as others. Also, he made the dart right, so I don't see the problem... If assholes are going to pick on him, at least do some research and know what your talking about.

  • geesh you dont have to push on the knife so darn hard. take off a little at a time and put time and care into it. you'll like it better that way

  • Pretty awesome I'm having trouble with flights and darts, tips?

  • Aztecs used bows as well.

  • just saying the word (atlatl is spear thrower )
